Wednesday evening Umbrella

The weekly umbrella at Donyatt is proving popular this winter with already 24 members turning out over the course of the first five weeks, with a record number of 22 last night. If you haven't yet tried it why not come along and have a go. The cost of the two hour session is £3 per person.

A number of items of clothing have been donated to the Club by an ex.member who is no longer able to play. The items are all in very good condition and are detailed on the Items for Sale page.

Following on from our win at Donyatt the next indoor match is versus Axminster on Saturday,1st.December starting at 2.00 p.m. There is a sheet up on the noticeboard for anyone wishing to play so you have plenty of time to put your name up.

 SJBC V Donyatt

Our first indoor match of the winter season versus Donyatt was a very close run thing with the lead changing hands several times. After five ends we found ourselves trailing by 19 shots to 8. However, we began to find our range and gradually fought our way back into the match. The result hinged on the last end, with one rink to finish we were one behind, but the Captain's rink  managed to score five to secure the victory by 62 shots to 58.

  Watering  system update

The work to install the automated watering system has entered phase two of the operation. The trenches for the pipework were dug out last Friday and Roy & team have already been able to install the equipment which is now being tested prior to the infill being completed.

Uffcolme Tourists

Yesterday saw an historic occasion when SJBC hosted a seven rink match against the Uffcolme Tourists. We had a wonderful afternoon in which to play the match which ebbed and flowed both ways until the final ends were played. The tourists eventually came out on top by seven shots winning 133 to 126.

It was a great afternoon played in a sporting, friendly atmosphere and after the buffet the visitors captain invited us to visit them next season.

This was an epic effort on behalf of our Club and I would like to thank everyone who turned out to play but most of all to those members who put so much work in to make the day another successful occasion. Special thanks go to Ann Larcombe for organising the event, Sheila Rees, Helga Williams & Christine Rawe who ran the show on the day, others including Dave Rees, Tony  & Margaret Robins, Anne Bright who all worked very hard to make sure everything worked on the day.

SJBC v Queen Camel

Our run of six consecutive wins this month came to an abrupt end on Saturday when we visited Queen Camel for this Wessex Mixed League match. Overall we were ahead after the 15th.end by eight shots but seemed to lose our way on  the home stretch in the end losing 65 shots to 81 and gaining just two points to our name.

Re-arranged fixtures

Please note that the following changes have been made to our fixture list as a result of England thus far doing well in the World Cup. They are as follows:

Tuesday 14th.August League match v Shaftesbury at Home start time 2.30 p.m.

Sunday  19th.August  League match v Queen Camel away start time 2.30 p.m.

Sunday 26th.August Aussie Pairs Club Competition (Provisonal) start time 2.00 p.m.

Due to England's unexpected progression to the World Cup semi-finals I have decided to postpone the triples matches on this date. This round of fixtures will be added on at the end and be played on the 8th.August.

S.J.B.C. v Shepton Mallet 8th.July

Thankfully we left our disastrous run of results in June behind us and secured a much needed win against Shepton Mallet by a score of 97 shots to 61. In blistering heat we managed to win on all four rinks securing 16 points from a match for only the second time this season. Lets hope this the start of better things to come in the remainder of the season!

As we have received enough interest in the above event we will hold the first round on Thursday,5th.July starting at 2.00 p.m. Those members who have shown interest have been sent further details via email however this is still open to any Club members so if you would like to come along, the main details are as follows.

The competition will be played as a pairs game. The pairs will be drawn each time we play so this means that you may play with a different partner each week. The game will consist of 15 ends and there are 10 points available per end. Scoring will be as normal fixed jack i.e. 4pts for shot wood, 3pts for 2nd, 2pts for 3rd. and 1pt for 4th. The points scored are for the team that you are playing in on the day but your score will be carried forward each time you play.

We are planning to run the event on the Thursdays where we haven't got Club commitments for other matches. The dates it will run therefore will be Jul 5th/12th, Aug 2nd/23rd/30th.,Sep 6th./13

The cost of playing will be the princely sum of £1.00 per game.

This format is good for practicing your weight on long and short jacks.

General News - Please read

Wednesday evening Umbrella

We have re-instated the Wednesday evening umbrella tournament along side the triples league matches so there is no excuse not to come along on a Wednesday evening for a roll-up or join in the Umbrella, and,of course the bar will be open whether you are playing or just watching. If you are new to the Club this is a great way to get to know other Club members.

Cost to play the umbrella is £1.00 and played over 12 ends.

Therefore we are looking at the possibility of reinstating the Thursday afternoon pairs competition in a new format that will be as

It will take the form of a pairs fixed jack umbrella competition run over the seven Thursdays left in the season that are not already committed to other matches. This is a fun format and helps players to adjust their speed of delivery to short and long jacks.

The dates would be 5th.July, 12th.July, 2nd.Aug, 23rd.Aug, 30th.Aug, and 6th.Sept. & 13th.Sept.

League match v South Petherton

Saturday,5th.May saw us gain our first league win of the season at home to South Petherton. The match was played in glorious sunshine and was a close contest right up to the final delivery. With three rinks finished and SJBC two up overall it was left to Ken Leamon's rink to secure the victory. On the 20th.end it looked as though we might concede the match as Ken's team were four down with just the two skips to bowl, however with his second wood Ken rolled in to win the end by one shot to level the scores going into the final end. Some great bowling by the team on the final end gave them a three shot win to secure the overall win by 82 to 77.

S.J.B.C. Open Day

Next Sunday, 13th.May is our designated Open Day. This will commence at 10.00 a.m. and finish around 4.00 p.m. Thanks to Geoff Kerr, the event has been well advertised so we are hoping to have a good response. Tea/Coffee & biscuits  will be available to anyone that turns up to have a go.

We would like to have as many members as possible come along at some point during the day to help, either with the refreshments, coaching or playing in a roll-up.

S.J.B.C. Pom Pom Display

The "Crafty Girls" got the Pom Pom feeling recently and as you can see made a display featuring the Club logo now displayed on the end  wall of the changing rooms.

At last the new outdoor season is underway but so far the results haven't gone our way.

The opening of the green was washed out without a wood being bowled and the opening friendly match against Yeovil that traditionally has been played in warm sunny weather was abandoned, one end after the tea break due to the wind and rain.

The good weather we enjoyed on Thursday & Sunday did not inspire our bowling and resulted in two defeats against Wellington & Castle Cary.

At tea time on Sunday we had a narrow advantage of 7 shots but after tea three of our four rinks had a torrid time between ends 13 -19 conceding 31 shots without reply which condemned us to defeat at the end of the match by 25 shots.

Next up are two Friendly matches at home to Chard and Ilminster this coming weekend so let's hope that the weather is kind to us and that we can improve our results.

 Severalls Sharks - TORQUAY 2017

A group of 18 of us enjoyed 5 days bowling at Torquay recently.

We had 14 bowlers and 4 non bowlers and we were again joined by a team from Bromley. Over the week we had mixed results but ended up winning 2 matches and losing 2. The weather was very kind to us so we were able to get out and about around Torbay. The hotel looked after us very well and we will be booking again next year.Report & photo by curtesy of Tony Robins.

 Bowls stickers

We now have a new supply of SJBC bowls stickers. These will be kept in the bar area, so if any members wish to renew the stickers on their woods please contact Mike or Christine. The cost of a set of four will be 50 pence per set.

SJBC Club Finals Day

For once the weather forecast for the weekend was accurate and it was a great call to bring finals day forward by 24 hours so that the day could be enjoyed in sunny and warm conditions. A  big well done and thanks to Roy & Sue for re-arranging at such short notice.

It was a long day for everyone concerned and additional thanks must go to Ann L & Sheila R for organising the catering, Bob for cooking the B.B.Q., Alec & Christine for bar duties and Sue A as official photographer. Also everyone that provided additional cakes, desserts and raffle prizes to make this a great day.

The matches were all played in a friendly spirit and it was good to see that a number of members succeeded in winning for the first time, last but not least thanks to club members who were not playing but came along to support the event including our two newest members Ann & Brian L.

SJBC Invitation Triples, Wednesday 16th.August

The annual Invitation Triples competition was held last Wednesday with teams fro Crewkerne, South Petherton, Chard , Donyatt & Chardstock competing with five teams from Severalls Jubilee.

The weather was kind to us all afternoon and everyone enjoyed the event which was once again sponsored by A.J.Wakely & Sons with prizes for the winners & runners-up provided by Ward & Sibley of Yeovil.

Thanks go to all of our sponsors and our friends from the visiting clubs for making this an enjoyable afternoon.

A big thank you also goes out to all of our members that assisted in running the event in various capacities, without you we wouldn't be able to stage these events.

It was a close finish between two of Severalls teams and was decided on shot difference with the smallest of margins - one shot!

Triples League

The triples league is rapidly becoming a two team race with teams A & E(The Lads) level on points with only a difference of plus nine shots separating the two teams. They play each other in the next round on the 23rd.August which could prove decisive as there will only be two matches after that to complete the league.

See the Triple league tab for league table and results

Australian Pairs Competition

Sixteen members participated in this competition yesterday afternoon. So eight teams played each other in a round robin format, the victors were Geoff Kerr & Graham Callaway who remained undefeated during the afternoon, having won six and drawing the other match.

Congratulations to Geoff & Graham who will be presented with their awards at the Annual Presentation lunch at the Hornsbury Mill on Sunday,19th.November.
