A group of 18 of us enjoyed 5 days bowling at Torquay recently.

We had 14 bowlers and 4 non bowlers and we were again joined by a team from Bromley. Over the week we had mixed results but ended up winning 2 matches and losing 2. The weather was very kind to us so we were able to get out and about around Torbay. The hotel looked after us very well and we will be booking again next year.Report & photo by curtesy of Tony Robins.

We now have a new supply of SJBC bowls stickers. These will be kept in the bar area, so if any members wish to renew the stickers on their woods please contact Mike or Christine. The cost of a set of four will be 50 pence per set.

Hopefully all members will want to support the Clubs application, to do so you will need to click on the link below to register your ten votes.

                                                                                Your Green Needs You !

 To Vote at

The Aviva Community Trust Fund

Aviva Insurance Co. have a Community Trust Scheme that provides funding for various good causes and community projects around the country. We have sent an application to the Trust in the £1k to £5k category to see if we can get a grant towards the cost of the automatic watering system that we wish to have installed. That was the easy bit!

There will be hundreds if not thousands of sports clubs and community projects after a slice of these funds. The way in which Aviva decide on who gets what, is to have the general public vote for the projects. The first two hundred projects that receive 1000 votes will receive an automatic grant.

The voting opens on the 24th.October and the day before we will be sent details of our application number which we will send out to let people know which project to vote for.

Prior to that date it is necessary for anyone that wishes to vote, to visit the Aviva Community Trust website to register their interest in voting.
This is what we are asking you to do.

Every person that registers with the Trust can vote up to 10 times, therefore we need a minimum of 100 persons prepared to vote for our project.

Obviously we do not have a hundred members in the Club to vote,so we need you to ask a few friends/family if they would be prepared to vote for our project.

If you are prepared to do this and spend a few minutes of your time to set things up, you will need to register with Aviva Community
Fund.

This is very easy to do by following the steps below:

Access your web browser and type in www.avivacommunityfund.co.uk
From home page select Register from green box in top right hand corner of screen.
Next screen appears. If you are not an aviva customer select Register now
Next screen appears. Complete the four boxes with your email address, a
password, first & last names & then press Finish button.
Next screen will ask you to check your email and click the link to activate your account.
Once  your account is activated you will be eligible to vote. You can submit up to ten votes from any one email address.
This whole process takes just a couple of minutes to set up.

Could you let Mike know if you are able to do this for the Club, you have 12 days in which to set up your registration. If every Club
member asked 3 relatives/friends to agree to do this we would exceed the minimum 1000 votes.

We will send out the Project code to everyone who wants to participate on Monday 23rd.October as soon as it is received from
Aviva in the hope that we can gain our 1000 votes.

Of course, this is a way for Aviva to build up their database of possible future customers that means that you might get some
unwanted email advertising from Aviva. You can unsubscribe from the site once the voting has closed.

SJBC Club Finals Day

For once the weather forecast for the weekend was accurate and it was a great call to bring finals day forward by 24 hours so that the day could be enjoyed in sunny and warm conditions. A  big well done and thanks to Roy & Sue for re-arranging at such short notice.

It was a long day for everyone concerned and additional thanks must go to Ann L & Sheila R for organising the catering, Bob for cooking the B.B.Q., Alec & Christine for bar duties and Sue A as official photographer. Also everyone that provided additional cakes, desserts and raffle prizes to make this a great day.

The matches were all played in a friendly spirit and it was good to see that a number of members succeeded in winning for the first time, last but not least thanks to club members who were not playing but came along to support the event including our two newest members Ann & Brian L.

SJBC Invitation Triples, Wednesday 16th.August

The annual Invitation Triples competition was held last Wednesday with teams fro Crewkerne, South Petherton, Chard , Donyatt & Chardstock competing with five teams from Severalls Jubilee.

The weather was kind to us all afternoon and everyone enjoyed the event which was once again sponsored by A.J.Wakely & Sons with prizes for the winners & runners-up provided by Ward & Sibley of Yeovil.

Thanks go to all of our sponsors and our friends from the visiting clubs for making this an enjoyable afternoon.

A big thank you also goes out to all of our members that assisted in running the event in various capacities, without you we wouldn't be able to stage these events.

It was a close finish between two of Severalls teams and was decided on shot difference with the smallest of margins - one shot!

Triples League

The triples league is rapidly becoming a two team race with teams A & E(The Lads) level on points with only a difference of plus nine shots separating the two teams. They play each other in the next round on the 23rd.August which could prove decisive as there will only be two matches after that to complete the league.

See the Triple league tab for league table and results

Australian Pairs Competition

Sixteen members participated in this competition yesterday afternoon. So eight teams played each other in a round robin format, the victors were Geoff Kerr & Graham Callaway who remained undefeated during the afternoon, having won six and drawing the other match.

Congratulations to Geoff & Graham who will be presented with their awards at the Annual Presentation lunch at the Hornsbury Mill on Sunday,19th.November.

Wessex Mixed Friendly League Cup Final

As most of you are aware, we managed to reach the Final after beating Westlands in the semi-final by 14 shots overall.

We now face Shepton Mallet for a third time this season and hopefully we can reverse the two previous league meeting results.

The match will be played at Shaftesbury on Sunday, 27th.August and there will be a meal after the game at a subsidised cost of £2.50 per head.Any additional guests will be charged £5.00 p.p.

Please add your names to the list in the Club house if you wish to be considered for playing in the match and also let Ann Larcombe know as soon as possible if you have any guests attending requiring the meal.

Please see "Items for Sale" page as there is a set of woods available.

Community Amateur Sports Club application

Members will recall that we applied for the above recognition for our Club in order that we can avoid the crippling rates demands that we unexpectedly started to receive last year.

I am pleased to confirm that after a long and protracted wait, H.M.R.C. have finally confirmed that we are now registered with them as a C.A.S.C.

Triples League

There will not be a round of the triples league next Wednesday, 26th.July due to the fact that the Wessex Cup, Semi-Final is due to be played that afternoon.

The next round of triples matches will take place on Wednesday,2nd.August.

North Petherton Friendly match on Sunday 23rd.July

This game has had to be cancelled due to the fact that only six of our club members wanted to play in the match!

Somerset Bowls Association President's team versus Severalls Jubilee Bowls Club ,Wednesday 28th.June

40th.Anniversary Celebration

A good number of members & friends came along last Saturday evening to celebrate the 40th.Anniversary of the resurrection & rebranding of the club to Severalls Jubilee Bowls Club. A quiz with questions based on 1977 was held and the winning team was the famous five, funny name seeing as they had eight in their team !

We also found out who was the longest serving member of the Club which turned out to be non other than Colin Phinn, who tells us that he joined the Club in 1976, the year before the new name was introduced.

During an interval in proceedings, new Club President, David Rees cut the cake and Hilary Leamon presented certificates & badges for a hot shot achieved whilst playing at Taunton  Deane to Roy Devney & Nan Austin. The other two members of the rink Cliff Pocock  & Graham Callaway were not able to attend on the evening so will get theirs at the next home match.

 Wessex Mixed Friendly League

The league now has a new website so you should now be able to access this to view league tables etc. The new address is as follows www.wessexmixedfriendlybowlsleague.btck.co.uk

Castle Cary

Unfortunately we were unable to carry our winning start to the season into our first League match against Castle Cary who ran out comfortable winners by 90 shots to 65. We managed only 2 points out of a possible sixteen by way of a draw on one rink (Margaret Robins, Alan McLaren, Roy Hodder, Dave Rees).

Wellington

We followed up Tuesday's victory at Yeovil with an impressive result against our first visitors of the season, Wellington. At the tea interval we were down on three rinks and level on the fourth. However as the old adage goes, it all changes after tea and eventually ran out winners by 87 shots to 65.

Club Competitions

Please ensure that if you are entering any of the internal Club Competitions your completed form and fees are returned to Roy Hodder as soon as possible in order that the draws can be made and competitions underway. It is important that each round of all comps is played as quickly as possible so please don't leave arranging matches until the closing dates of each round.

First match of the Season

Yesterday, we visited Yeovil Bowls Club for our traditional first match of the season. It was played in sunny but on occasions very chilly weather. The match was played in a very friendly manner and the scores were very even at the tea break, however we eventually prevailed and won on two rinks and lost on two with the final overall score a win for Severalls by 85 shots to 70. A very pleasing result for the first match of the year so long may it continue.

Tomorrow we host our first home match versus Wellington which is a new fixture for us so we are looking forward to welcoming them to our venue.

Work Rotas

The first of the work rotas (Green maintenance) has now been finalised and a copy can be found on the clubhouse notice board and also here on the website under the Maintenance tab. The other rotas will follow shortly.

Please see the Team Selection page where you will find the teams selected to play Wellington & Castle Cary.

Opening of the Green

This took place this afternoon with twenty-eight players attending. The Captain called upon the newly appointed Club President(David Rees) to deliver the first wood of the new season. The afternoon was billed as a Ladies v Gents match but as the Gents outnumbered the ladies 3 to 1, some Gents represented the ladies team. 15 ends were played and the Green played very well for the first outing of the season. Everyone enjoyed the sunny but chilly weather and eventually the Ladies finished victorious by 45 shots to 44.

New members

A warm welcome is extended to four new Club members, Sheila Lock, Terry Cannon, Geoff Kerr & Frank Agar. We hope that they will have a happy and successful season with our Club.

Club Competitions

The Treasurer (Sue Hodder) gave out the fixture cards to all that attended today along with the internal club competitions form. It would be greatly appreciated if you could return these as soon as possible in order that the Competitions Secretary (Roy Hodder) can make the draws for each event.

Hi Everyone,

I have a number of news items for you as follows:

1. Helga.

Our thoughts and sympathies go out to Helga & her family for their loss of her Mother. Helga is currently  back in Vienna and has asked that no-one sends any sort of bereavement card/e.mails so please respect her wishes on this matter.

Hopefully we will be seeing more of Helga from now on.

2. President

It is the duty of the committee to appoint a new President to succeed Lacon and in this respect the unanimous decision of the committee was to approach David Rees with a view of taking on this role.

I am pleased to say that David is happy to become the Club President and this was ratified at last nights committee meeting.

We have discussed the situation with Frances and she is happy that we proceed with this as she says that this is what Lacon would have wanted to happen.

Camera, Action, Bowl !

Those of you that attended the Finals Day will probably recall that our very own Steven Spielberg, aka Tony Robins was busy filming anything that moved on the day!

Tony has now copied his efforts onto DVD and assures me that the film is only fit for family viewing!

Tony has undertaken this project to try and raise as much money as possible to go towards our Club funds and new projects that we might undertake. The price of the DVD is £2.50 and as mentioned all of the proceeds will go to club funds so please try and support Tony's great effort.

If you would like to purchase a copy of the DVD please contact Tony directly.

 2016 SJBC Invitation Triples Tournament

The full details of the results are below and it was good to see that all Severalls teams did very well.

Overall we played 25 matches, winning 15, drawing 2, losing 8, scoring 127 shots to 87 against giving a shot difference of +37.

Once again we have to give our grateful thanks to many people without whom we would not be able to stage such a successful event.

We thank A.J.Wakely & Sons for their sponsorship and Ward & Sibley (Sally & Steve) for providing the wonderful carriage clocks for the winners and runners-up.

Last but not least a BIG thankyou to all the members that worked hard on the day to make the Tournament successful, your efforts are truly appreciated.

There were so many helpers on the day it is difficult to name everyone, however special thanks go to the folks that provided the splendid cream tea and worked in the kitchen & bar.

Notice to all club members on the Teas rota

Due to new legislation we now have to be even more careful with food stuffs that are prepared for the club teas, and to this effect we are required to display a notice in the Clubhouse regarding allergies, etc., We cannot take a chance that the inspectors who descend upon us without warning will take any negative action that would result in us not being able to provide food for our matches & social events.

Therefore, if you are on the rota for providing sandwiches & cakes for club teas could we please request that when it is your turn to provide the sandwiches you only use PURE SUNFLOWER spread. This means that any vegetarians and people that are allergic to dairy products will be accommodated.
As, hopefully the weather is now warming up could I also remind everyone that when on kitchen duty the waste food and rubbish bins should be emptied to avoid any undue smells in the clubhouse.
Thank you in advance for your co-operation.

Club Rotas

The club maintenance page has been updated with the various job rotas as they were originally planned. There have been some changes already that people have made to suit circumstances that will not be reflected in the lists so please make sure of your allocated dates.
